Coronavirus News Update – Sept. 27: N.Y. Declares State of Emergency as Mass Firings of Non-Vaccinated Healthcare Workers Loom

Monday is the deadline for healthcare workers in New York State to be vaccinated or be dismissed.  The dispute is dividing hospitals, where the overwhelming majority of employees are already inoculated, and other healthcare institutions.  In mid-August, then Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered that all healthcare workers in the state, including staff at nursing homes, adult care, and other congregate care settings, be inoculated against the coronavirus by September 27.

Some hospitals have had to put elective surgeries on hold as hospitals face mass firings.  Lewis County General Hospital, a facility in upstate New York, is “pausing” deliveries of babies due to the number of maternity unit employee resignations over the state’s Covid-19 vaccination requirements, health officials say.

Governor Kathy Hochul plans to declare a statewide state of emergency that will allow healthcare workers not licensed in New York State, retirees, and recent graduates to practice in New York.

As of Monday morning, the world has recorded 232.7 million Covid-19 cases and over 4.76 million deaths, according to Worldometer, a service that tracks such information. In addition, 209.4 million people worldwide have recovered from the virus.

The average daily number of new coronavirus cases in the United States over the past 14 days is 119,883, a -18% change.  The average daily death toll over the same period is 2,031, a change of 23% over the previous period.

In addition, since the start of the pandemic the United States has recorded over 43.75 million cases, a higher figure than any other country, and a death toll of 706,338. India has the world’s second highest number of officially recorded cases, almost 33.7 million, and a death toll of 447,362, although experts believe that both numbers are in reality significantly higher.

Since vaccinations started at the end of last year 6.13 billion doses have been administered across the globe as of Monday morning, an increase of 0.03 billion over the past 24 hours and the equivalent of 80 doses for every 100 people, a one dose increase per hundred over the past 24 hours.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that, as of Monday, 213.5 million people in the United States – or 64.3% – have received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine. Of that population, 55.3%, or 183.7 million people, are now fully vaccinated, and the total number of doses that have been dispensed in the United States is now 390.1 million. Breaking this down further, 77% of the population over the age of 18 – or 198.9 million people – has received at least a first inoculation and 66.6% of the same group – or 171.8 million people – is fully vaccinated.

Finally, in Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis named a doctor skeptical of many accepted Covid-19 health measures as the state surgeon general. Dr. Joseph Ladapo, who attended Harvard Medical School, has been critical of many public health measures during the pandemic, including mask-wearing, lockdowns, and vaccines.
